Ted Barris - Dam Busters
May 10, 2023 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka Presents TED BARRIS

DAM BUSTERS
Canadian airmen and the secret raid against Nazi Germany

The secret raid against the hydro-electric dams of Germany’s Ruhr River took years to plan, involved an untried bomb, and included the best aircrews Allied Bomber Command could muster – a quarter of them were Canadians. The raid marked the first time the Allies tactically took the war inside Nazi Germany. The mission became legendary.

On May 16, 1943, one hundred and thirty-three airmen took off in nineteen Lancaster bombers on a night sortie, code-named “Operation Chastise.” Hand-picked and specially trained, the Lancaster crews flew at treetop level from England to the industrial heartland of the Third Reich and their targets – the Ruhr River dams – whose massive water reservoirs powered Nazi Germany’s military industrial complex.

Trinity United Church : Wed. May 10th 7:00 - 8:30PM

Not a soldier, but the soldier’s storyteller, not a veteran, but recognized by vets as ‘keeper of the flame’.

Ted Barris has now published 20 non-fiction books, Over a dozen wartime histories. For 50 years, he has worked as a broadcaster in Canada and the USA.
The RCAF Association recognized
Dam Busters with its 2018 NORAD Trophy, for “significant and unequalled contribution to the preservation of Air Force values, traditions, history and heritage.”

Please join with us as Ted Barris vividly recounts the 80th anniversary of that night in 1943!

About this event

The SportLab, the Town of Huntsville, Ontario Provincial Police, Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka, Rotary, Fowler Construction and Muskoka Bicycle Pro Shop have joined forces to present this fun and educational bike clinic focused on teaching kids the basics of cycling safely, all in a non-threatening environment.

The Kids' Bike Rodeo is appropriate for school aged kids from 4-9.

There are FOUR half hour time slots available for registration:

  • 4:30 - 5:00 pm
  • 5:00 - 5:30 pm
  • 5:30 - 6:00 pm
  • 6:00 - 6:30 pm

Participants will go through a variety of stations geared to helping them improve their cycling knowledge and skills. These include:

  • Bike and Helmet Safety Checks
  • Road Safety (signs & hand signals)
  • Mock Intersection
  • Shoulder Checks
  • Riding Agility
  • Slow Speed Bike Control
  • Avoiding Hazards

Afterwards, each cyclist will receive a healthy snack, a completed checklist, a certificate and some free gear!

The SportLab is excited to help our young residents participate safely in regular physical activity such as cycling. We also hope to motivate kids to think about cycling as a means of transportation or as a possible sport of choice as they develop into young adults.
